Nous les appelons les aidant. Eux se reconnaissent avant tout comme des conjoints, des parents, des enfants, des frères et sœurs, de bons voisins, de fidèles amis… Qui sont-ils ces anonymes qui, tous les jours, contribuent au maintien à domicile et au mieux être d’un proche ?
Le 6 octobre, nous parlons d’eux et saluons leur contribution qui n’a pas de prix mais, le reste du temps, elle semble naturelle, acquise et allant de soi.
Ces aidants sont un peu plus de 8 millions, avec une majorité de femmes, d’âge, de situation et de revenus très différents, potentiellement vous et moi…
On « devient » plus qu’on ne « choisit » d’être un aidant. Le passage du temps, le handicap, la maladie, l’accident… ce rôle peut nous incomber d’un jour à l’autre mais qui de nous souhaite penser à ces choses de la vie et les anticiper ?
Héros de la vie ordinaire ?
Aucun d’entre nous n’est préparé. Comparer les aidants à des héros de la vie ordinaire serait oublier que la plupart préfèreraient ne pas avoir à mener cette bataille contre la perte d’autonomie, la maladie ou, bataille perdue d’avance, la fin de vie. Nous sommes inégalement résilients et cette vérité beaucoup d’aidants l’ignorent, au détriment de leur santé. Combien s’épuisent à vouloir faire face ? Combien s’isolent à faire de leur mieux ? Combien s’oublient en chemin, délaissant petit à petit ce qui peut leur faire du bien. Combien sont trop usés pour entendre les conseils autour d’eux ? Combien commettent sans le vouloir des maladresses persuadés qu’ils sont de faire pour le mieux ? Combien se sentent indispensables quand ils se rendent en fait indispensables !
Jeter l’éponge ?
Beaucoup d’aidants ont besoin d’apprendre l’indulgence envers eux-mêmes : les femmes qui concilient aujourd’hui ce rôle traditionnel avec leur carrière professionnelle ; les hommes qui, plus désemparés, apprennent à assumer ce rôle de care giver. Certains vivent l’espoir et la combativité chevillés au corps, d’autres sont très affectés et aucune attitude n’est meilleure qu’une autre à ce poste pour lequel n’existe pas de formation… C’est bien là la difficulté d’être aidant. Se retrouver dans un emploi sans formation, sans statut, sans convention collective, sans rémunération, sans droit particulier et surtout pas celui de se reposer et sans reconnaissance parfois. Les aidants sont des bénévoles qui n’ont pas le luxe de dire : « j’ai donné ce que je pouvais », « c’est au-dessus de mes forces », « je passe la main », « place à d’autres »…
Lâcher prise ?
Certains, pour se protéger et c’est tant mieux, arrivent à lâcher prise, à se dire qu’ils ne sont pas des héros ordinaires, à laisser des choses de côté, à se faire aider s’ils en ont la possibilité, et l’humilité aussi… Car lâcher prise, c’est aussi accepter de ne pas être le seul à pouvoir faire face quand beaucoup d’aidants se sont petit à petit rendus indispensables. Avec la prise de conscience progressive de la charge énorme, physique, financière et émotionnelle, portée par ces travailleurs de l’ombre, l’aide aux aidants s’organise progressivement sans que la demande vienne nécessairement des aidants eux-mêmes, bien trop accaparés par leur quotidien et ce que l’on nomme « le fardeau de l’aidant ». Des mutuelles, des entreprises, des associations commencent à adresser leurs besoins, au premier rang desquels se trouve celui de pouvoir souffler.
Un point de non retour ?
Rompre l’isolement des aidants est pressant. Le maintien à domicile des personnes âgées ne peut se faire sans eux. Il ne doit pas se faire au prix de leur santé. La société n’a pas les moyens de s’en passer mais elle ne met pas les moyens suffisants pour leur venir en aide en les accompagnant davantage. Nous ne le répèterons jamais assez : si l’aidant craque, le maintien à domicile n’est plus possible. Il est donc urgent d’adresser ces besoins et de ne plus permettre que des aidants se retrouvent seuls face à des situations dramatiques. Pour reprendre la formule d’un médecin urgentiste : quand on hospitalise en urgence une personne âgée, c’est souvent l’aidant qui est le plus mal en point. Un point de non retour ? Un appel au secours ?
A chacun d’entre nous d’être plus attentif à ces personnes souvent démunies mais courageuses qui ont tendance à s’oublier parce qu’elles n’ont pas une minute à elle et qu’elles sont submergées par l’intensité affective de ce qu’elles vivent…
